Tips&tricks: create complex formats

Learn how to create a complex format starting from a mask in Adobe Illustrator ... but not only

How to create a complex format for a non-regular tile

In this lesson you will learn now to create a complex format.

We will target this goal in 2 different ways. The first one is dedicated to professionals in graphics, who usually work also with Adobe Illustrator. The second is dedicated to standard DomuS3D® users, who will be able to rely just on the Application starting from June 2016.

This is the list of arguments:

  • Create a complex format using Adobe Illustrator
  • Create a complex format using DomuS3D® (Patch R3 - June 2016)
  • Tile floors/walls using a complex format

Create a complex format using Adobe Illustrator

  1. Let's suppose that the tile is the following one. We cannot use the hexagon dynamic pattern, as we need to always repeat these tiles this way.

  2. Load the tile image in Illustrator
  3. Create a tracing, tracking the tile profile

  4. Export the trace in DXF format, and save it on disk.

  5. Import DXF in the layout window of a DomuS3D® project, thanks to command: File-Import/Export-Import layout from DXF.  It is possible that the scale is not the correct one. Adjust it clicking the right mouse button over the trace, and selecting command: Apply scale-Select reference line. If you assume that the hexagone insert is 10 cm sided, you will get this result:
  6. As the scale of the trace is now the correct one, click over it with the right mouse button, and select Explode in order to convert it to a standard CAD2D entity. Click again the right mouse button and select command Create complex format. Save it in the suggested folder.

  7. Now you can create a new tile in the Application's catalogue: Ribbon-Database-Coverings-Tiles management-New. Select, as the format, the one you have saved in point 6.

  8. The tile is now ready to be used in projects.

Create a complex format using DomuS3D® 2016 (patch R3 - June 2016)

  1. If you do not have any tool that allows you to export its trace in DXF format, you can operate anyway by using your DomuS3D®. Create a tile with a standard format: for the format specify the bounding box dimension of the tile (the bounding box is the minimum rectangle that contains the complex format).
  2. Open or create an empty project, click the right mouse button over the floor and select command Floor(2D). Lay on it the last tile you created as a single tile, by using the command Ribbon-Wall-Coverings-Add a tile.

  3. Using CAD 2D tools draw a polyline following the trace of the complex format. When ready, click the right mouse button over the polyline, and select command Create complex format.

  4. Save complex format in the suggested folder. Then modify the tile, and change the former (standard) format with the complex one you just saved.

Tile floors/walls using a complex format

  1. With the Application you're currently running the only way you can lay down and repeat a complex format is to create a panel, and repeat it with the Define module command. Click here if you want to see a movie dedicated to this command.
  2. Important piece of news: if you own DomuS3D® 2016, you are entitled receiving a free upgrade (called Patch R3) containing new features dedicated to complex formats. With them you will be able to easily Drag&Drop complex formats from the Components window, just the way you already do with standard formats. No more panels and Define module features to simply lay down complex formats. We're excited, already!
The Free upgrade is scheduled by the end of June 2016. Stay tuned in order to receive the summer upgrade!

Thanks for your time.
Enjoy your DomuS3D®
