“In the field of design what really matters is the concept expressed through a sketch”.
Ludovico “Vico” Magistretti was born in Milan in 1920, he was a designer, an architect and one of the most appreciated urbanists in Italy. Magistretti graduated in 1945 at the architecture dept. of Politecnico di Milano. He started working with his father, the architect Pier Giulio Magistretti, designing some of the most significant buildings of Milan during the 30s and 40s.
Magistretti’s motto was “from sketch to shape”. Indeed, he has never realized technical draws, on the contrary he preferred to express an idea trough a sketch. He used to make sketches on everything was passing through his hands, such as envelopes, newspapers pages, subway’s tickets.
He has worked with the most important firms in the field of industrial design: Artemide, Cassina, De Padova, Flou, Campeggi, Kartell, O-Luce, Schiffini, Olivari. For them, Magistretti designed some of the most significant Italian industrial design products, such as: lamps, chairs, tables, beds, kitchens etc.
He was particularly involved in the thematic of living and, from the 60s, he started focusing only on it. Magistretti developed a very expressive design language that was very influent and appreciated in Milan’s design environment, and made Magistretti one of the leading designer of his era.
