“Mari is not a designer, if their object wasn’t there I’d be not worried. However, Mari is the conscience of us all, he’s the designers conscience. That’s what really matter.”
Alessandro Mendini

Enzo Mari (Cerano 1932), is considered one of the greatest theorist of Italian and global design. Designer, critic and theorist, he has been awarded four times with the Compasso d’Oro, and he has been enlisted in the prestigious Royal Designers for Industry of Royal Society of Arts of London.
Mari has attended the Academy of Brera in Milan from 1952 to 1956, where he studied literature and arts, focusing on the psychology of visual perception. When he finished his studies, he started to get involved in the raising field of industrial design by presenting his first project to the furniture manufacturer Danesi in 1957.
The studies on the perception and social role of design and its function in everyday life have had a huge impact on his work. According to him, the designer should not be only interested in the creation of nice objects, but also be concerned about functionality and practicality.
Enzo Mari criticizes marketing that in the last years has transformed designers from creative philosophers to mere trend sniffers. Mari has designed more than 1.500 objects in his career, working for the most important Italian companies such as Zanotta, Alessi, Driade, Artemide, Olivetti and Ideal Standard. Mari’s works are exhibited in the most important museum and art galleries in the world, for instance at the Galleria Nazionale di Arte Moderna in Rome, at the MOMA in New York and at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan.
